Mineral Deposits Studies Group 2023

Mineral Deposits Studies Group 2023

  • Date10 January 2023

Adam Eskdale - PhD Candidate Mineral Resources

I recently attended the 2023 Mineral Deposits Studies Group (MDSG) annual conference, this year hosted at the Centre for Sustainable Resource Extraction, University of Leicester.

The Mineral Deposits Studies Group (MDSG) is a special interest group associated with the Geological Society, the Mineralogical Society and the Institute of Materials Minerals and Mining (IOM3).

The 3-day conference was filled with some excellent talks and poster sessions covering a wide breadth of research from the mineral resources sector including mineral exploration, ore deposit genesis, and critical metal supply chains. Keynotes included fantastic talks by both Karen Hanghøj (Director of the British Geological Survey, BGS) and Paul Monks (Chief Scientific Advisor to the UK government) presenting unique insights into the criticality of UK mineral supplies and the future for global supply chains to meet carbon-neutral technological demands.

I presented a 15-minute talk on the use of the G-BASE stream sediment geochemical database as a combined geological mapping / prospectivity tool for As-Co-Cu-Ni mineralisation in the UK county of Cumbria. This led to some great feedback and conversations with those who were interested in my work, hopefully leading to some more research in the future as my publications come out!
