Young Scientist Medal awarded to Wenqing Liu

Dr Wenqing Liu from the Department of Electronic Engineering at Royal Holloway has been awarded the Young Scientist Medal for the year 2018 by the International Association of Advanced Materials (IAAM), a prime organisation in the field of Advanced Materials.

The award recognises Dr Wenqing Liu for her notable and outstanding contribution in the field of two-dimensional spintronic systems, whose unique two-dimensional electron-gas-like behaviour has not only enriched the world of condensed matter physics, but also provided a platform for transformative technical innovations.

Dr Wenqing Liu joined Royal Holloway as a Lecturer in 2016, bringing significant experience and expertise in Nano-electronics research, and she leads the Nano-Electronics Group in the Department of Electronic Engineering.

Research profile and publications

Dr Wenqing Liu’s research covers a diverse set of advanced electronic materials particularly in their nano-forms. For applied materials, the spin ordering has long been investigated within the context of conventional ferromagnetic metals and their alloys, while the study of spin generation, relaxation, and spin-orbit engineering in non-magnetic materials has taken off rather recently with the advent of spintronics. It is here that many novel material systems can find their greatest potential in both science and technology. In the pursuit for such goals, the intrinsic material properties are important indicators and the artificially synthetized hybrid systems are valuable models for studying spin-dependent phenomena and could potentially be used as actual components for an eventual spintronic device.

Within the areas of nanotechnology and instrumentation, Dr Wenqing Liu has published several papers in high-impact journals such as Advanced Materials, Nanoletters, ACS Nano, and Physical Review Letters and given invited talks in major conferences and the worldwide universities/research institutes. She is the invited author of two book chapters for Springer Reference “Handbook of Spintronics”, Taylor & Francis “Skyrmion”, and the Current Opinion in Solid State and Material Science Anniversary Special Issue “Magnetic Two-Dimensional Systems”. She is a member of the editorial board of Nature Scientific Report and the referee for several influential journals such as NanoLetters, Europe Physics Letters, and Applied Physics Letters. She is the session chair of the IEEE MMM conference, the committee member of the Advanced Materials & Processing, and the International Conference on Functional Materials. She is the recipient of several prestigious award such as KM Stott Memorial Prize for Outstanding Scientific Research (2015), York VC’s Special Award (2013) and Holbeck Award (2010).
