Year Abroad Schemes run by the Department of Classics

The Department of Classics offers placements in the following countries:

Greece: Athens and Thessaloniki

No prior knowledge of Modern Greek is required. We have created customised plans based on independent study on topics and essays chosen in consultation with the tutors there with ad hoc one-to-one support in English and final examinations or coursework also in English.

Groningen in the Netherlands

There would be a choice of courses which would be taught in English, so no prior knowledge of Dutch is required.

Austria: Vienna

You need to be proficient in German to apply for this placement through the 'integral' route (see below). The department also offers a limited number of suitably qualified students the opportunity to study the language for two years through intensive German classes in preparation for an application to this (but only through the 'additional year' route: see below).

France: Lille - NEW (Currently under validation)

You need to be proficient in French for this placement.

You can apply to take up one of the above placements within the framework of our International degrees: we offer BAs in Classics, Classical Studies or Ancient History with a Year Abroad that last four years. The placement would be a third, extra, year. There is considerable flexibility when designing the exact layout of this year and it would be an opportunity for you to further particular interests in the Classical World, get a head start in your broad dissertation field, try out something different and immerse into the culture.  The work during your year abroad would count as the 20% of your third year, if you had stayed in London. You would then come back to complete the remaining 80% in a final, fourth, year. You can apply for these degrees during the course of your second year of study at Royal Holloway. Your original degree would be switched to the one with the year abroad component once you have successfully completed your year away.

You can apply to take up one of the above placements as your second 'integral' year (with credit transfer). This means we organise an appropriate study plan for you, so that you study and take all your second year exams abroad and you then return to re-join your cohort for your third and final year.

College-wide Study Aboard and Exchanges

Additionally to these opportunities, the college runs its own competition for placements in the college-wide International Exchanges Programme (sending you further away from Europe, such as to the USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, Mexico etc). Through this scheme you can spend a year in one of our international partner universities, either as an integral year (that would be your second year in Classics), or as an additional year (that would be an extra year between your second and third year at Royal Holloway).
