What is a graduand?

The term graduand refers to anyone who is about to receive an academic degree. Once a graduand has been presented to the Presiding Officer, they become a graduate.

Reception

A reception is held after each ceremony for graduands and guests.

What do we mean by 'doffing' your cap?

During the ceremony, graduands will be expected to doff their cap before they are handed their scroll. As you approach the Presiding Officer to collect your scroll, you will stop in front of them and doff your cap. You do not lift your cap, just put your right hand to the edge of your cap and give a little nod in their direction.

Children

As part of the registration and booking process we'll ask you to confirm whether you will be bringing a child under the age of five to your ceremony. Pushchairs and buggies are not permitted in the ceremony venue.

Graduation ceremonies are formal in nature and young children may become restless or unsettled during the ceremony. To avoid any disruption to the ceremony, guests with very young children will be asked to sit near the exit so they can easily leave the venue if they need to do so.

Children under five years of age do not require a guest ticket but must be seated on an adults lap in the venue.

Children aged five years and over will need to have their own guest ticket. There are no child concessions for the purchase of additional guest tickets.
