Overview

This is the second year core course for the Liberal Arts degree and focuses on the theme of  'Power and Dissent'. Students will refine the comparative and critical thinking developed in the first year course for Liberal Arts ('Cultural Encounters') and will explore the rhetorical strategies of ‘power’ and ‘dissent’ from a  number of different disciplines including politics, literature, film, performing arts and ethnography. You will explore a variety of contexts that exemplify the dynamics of power and dissent – such as European nationalism and imperialism, anti-colonial and postcolonial nationalism, global politics and radicalism, religious extremism, war, migration and climate change – and will be able to assess comparatively the different strategies of expression used in diverse contexts and media.

Bibliography

Bibliographies will be made available to you to support the four blocks. Key readings will be provided on Moodle wherever possible.
