Welcome to the Department of Computer Science

Computing is the heart of modern life, and in every field, from music to medicine, from finance to media, the shift to digital is accelerating. We were among the first computer science departments in the world to offer Masters courses in Big Data in 2013. A Masters degree in Computer Science from Royal Holloway will equip you with a deep understanding of computing as a science and the practical skills that you will need to succeed in this fast-moving and exciting area.

We have earned a reputation as a strong research department, currently ranked 17th in the UK for research quality (The Times and Sunday Times University Guide, 2023). We're renowned particularly for our research excellence in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, meaning you'll be taught by world-leading academics who are at the forefront of advancing scientific disciplines and shaping the future.

Our hands-on approach to teaching, state-of-the-art facilities and a vast network of professional alumni, ensures our graduates are well-prepared for their future careers. 92% of our graduates are in graduate employment or further study within 15 months (The Times and Sunday Times University Guide, 2023), at a breadth of organisations that include Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Amazon.
