About the composer
Jordan Lewis (b. 2000) is a final-year undergraduate student at Royal Holloway, University of London.
"During my final year as an undergraduate student, I am specialising in composition. I am particularly interested in creating music that accompanies film and television.
As a clarinettist, my experiences playing in different orchestras and ensembles have shaped the music I write. I also play guitar and bass – as a sixth-former, I played bass in various rock and pop bands and worked on original songs, which we’d then perform at gigs and record in the studio. Playing in different ensembles has drawn my attention to different musical styles and approaches to composition and music making.
Using digital recording software, I often create music that combines acoustic recordings and live instruments with synthesisers and electronics. Earlier this year, I submitted my short composition, DISCONNECT, to the Student Workshop’s ‘Collaborative Short Film Festival’, which premiered on their YouTube channel. DISCONNECT mixes electronic instruments with distorted electric guitar. The tone and overall mood of the piece is very generally inspired by the sci-fi drama series, Torchwood.
During Welcome Week at Royal Holloway, I worked with other student composers on the Beethoven Snapshots project. This involved creating a piece of music inspired by Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3, using recordings of various excerpts made by orchestral musicians at the university. This was then premiered in an online concert.
I am currently writing music for use in a TV series called Engendered, which is being made in collaboration with the Media Arts and Drama Departments at Royal Holloway, University of London.
