Early adversity and health: examining causality and individual risk

Adverse childhood experiences are well-established risk factors for mental and physical health problems. However, a wealth of research describing these associations has led to two common - yet largely untested - assumptions. First, it is assumed that adverse childhood experiences cause later health problems. Second, it is assumed that adverse childhood experiences predict health problems at the individual level. This presentation will describe research critically testing these assumptions, using data from longitudinal birth cohort studies.
