How can I install EndNote?

EndNote is a piece of reference management software, used to make formatting references and bibliographies in your academic work easier. It allows you to save references from online resources, and export them into your EndNote library.

You will require a CampusNet or VPN connection to download the installation files, and to run EndNote when it has been installed.

Download and install Endnote for Mac and for Windows. For personal devices we recommend you right-click the downloaded installer, and select 'Run as Administrator'.

The items above will download as zip files. You will need to:

  • Ensure you are connected to the internet
  • Download the zip
  • Extract the downloaded files

For the Mac file, once dowloaded:

  • Quit Microsoft Word if you have this app open
  • Open the downloaded package, double-click 'Install EndNote 21', click 'Install', then click 'Next' to complete the install wizard, which may take some time, until it says 'Done'
  • When prompted, enter an administrator password
  • The first time you launch Endnote, it may request access to your Documents folder; click OK
  • Microsoft Word may also request access to control Endnote 21; click OK

For the Windows file, once downloaded:

  • Quit Microsoft Word if you have this app open
  • Right click on 'install.bat' and select 'Run as Administrator'. If prompted, allow permission
  • Depending on the speed of your computer installation will take 5-10 minutes.  Once the black command window disappears, installation is complete
  • Open Endnote 21 by clicking the link in the 'Start Menu'.
