We have been informed by Public Health England that a small number of people in Surrey have contracted measles, including one of our students who is now recovering.

Measles is a highly infectious viral illness, which is spread by coughs and sneezes or by direct contact with an infected person.

The first signs of measles are:

  1. Fever
  2. Cough, runny nose and red, sore eyes
  3. After a few days, a spotty rash will appear. It starts on the face and neck before spreading to the rest of the body.

You can find out more information about measles on the NHS website.

If you think that you may have measles, please telephone your GP practice for advice. It is important that you call in advance. The doctor can then make the necessary arrangements so that you don’t potentially pass the infection onto others.

Public Health England advise that you check if you have been immunised with the MMR vaccine. This vaccine protects against measles, mumps and rubella, and two doses of the MMR vaccine are needed.

If you are concerned about your health, please consult your General Practitioner or our Wellbeing Team.
