PGCR 2016: Christina Themistocli

PGCR 2016: Christina Themistocli

Selected as part of the first Picture Gallery Composer-in-Residence scheme.

Cypriot Christina Themistocli found interest in music from an early age. It was not long after, that she found her love for music in the way John Blacking defined to be “humanly organized sound” which stroke Christina to experiment with composition.

Christina is currently a third-year music student at Royal Holloway, University of London focusing in composition under Mark Bowden, Helen Grime and Samantha Fernando, while being involved in numerous composition seminar series with visitor composers such as Edmund Finnis and Michael Finnissy. Christina’s musical engagement follows current issues and trends in contemporary classical music developed in her own creative approach, while also elaborating with alternative forms of art.

Recent works have been for female vocal trio, viola and harp, violin and piano, wind quintet, string quartet with electronics, and film music compositions, whilst present engagements include a solo clarinet piece, and a trumpet and alto saxophone duo; the project she will be presenting as a Student Composer in Residence for the Picture Gallery at Royal Holloway.

Christina aims to continue her studies and obtain a Masters degree in film music composition.
