PGCR 2017: Carwyn Jones

PGCR 2017: Carwyn Jones

Selected as part of the 2017 Picture Gallery Composer-in-Residence scheme.

After training as a Cellist from the age of 8, Carwyn Jones developed a keen interest in composition when he began writing String Quartets. Carwyn continued his musical education at Royal Holloway, University of London; where he studied composition with Mark Bowden and Helen Grime. During his time at Royal Holloway Carwyn has had the opportunity to work with the Chroma ensemble and Juice vocal ensemble, and well as individually with the Clarinetist Stuart King and Cellist Steffan Morris.

He has had works performed by fellow students at Royal Holloway including his piece 'Here' for solo Piano performed by Oliver Cuttriss. Highly programmatic, Carwyn's music is often influenced by literary sources and as such conforms more to archetypes of narrative structure rather than typical musical form. His music also incorporates musical characters and often uses symbolic instrumentation to allow developments in the musical narrative to be reflected in the instrumental interaction.
