PGCR 2018: Miguel Oliveira

Selected as part of the 2018 Picture Gallery Composer-in-Residence scheme.

Originally from Portugal, Miguel Oliveira graduated in piano in 2008, studying with Drs. Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro and Rosa Maria Barrantes whilst participating in several masterclasses with international professors such as Eldar Nebolsin and Liudmilla Roschina. In 2011 completed his second graduation, in composition, studying with the British composer Christopher Bochmann and the Portuguese composer Pedro Amaral. Since then, has composed several pieces and arrangements for choir and ensembles, premiered in his country as well as some in the USA. Has received several commissions in Portugal for composing for orchestra, choir with several ensembles and chamber opera.

Since 2010 has participated in several international conducting masterclasses with American conductors such as Stephen Coker, Eugene Rogers, Cara Tascher and Paul Caldwell, aswell as with Portuguese conductors and composers Paulo Lourenço and Gonçalo Lourenço.

In the last eight years has founded several choirs in his home country aswell as a choir and ensemble internship for highschool music students, projects in which has been working as composer, writting original music and arrangements, aswell as conducter. Has taught piano, composition and conducting to highschool students during this time. In his music, the presence of history thematics or other art forms is a constant as a work basis, regularly using rhetoric techniques to create his harmonic, melodic and rhythmic fields.
