Selected as part of the 2019 Picture Gallery Composer-in-Residence scheme.
For the majority of her musical career and education, Sofía has mainly been a pianist, but her interest in composition surfaced around 2015 when she began taking lessons in harmony and orchestration at the Junior Liceu Conservatoire in Barcelona. Under the teachings of Catalan musicologist and professor Víctor Solé, Sofía began working on pieces for string quartet and solo piano.
Upon arrival to the university in 2017 to study Music and Drama, Royal Holloway offered her a platform to compose new music and to explore different styles and forms of composition. Her love for theatre and film inspired her to seek new compositional projects, which led her to an exciting collaboration on a second-year Media Arts film assignment (Office Hours, dir. Sam Bassett) for which she composed a short soundtrack. During the same time, she also worked with theatre director Rebecca McCutcheon on a semi-professional production of The Deceiver Deceived (1697) which was rehearsed and performed at RHUL’s Drama Department. For the play, Sofía worked as a sound designer and composer, devising an accompanying score which was a blend of Baroque-style music with modern synthesizers as an instrument.
Sofía recently gained interest in writing for choral ensembles, so she is beyond excited to take part in this year’s residency and to have the opportunity to work closely with the well-renowned Choir of Royal Holloway.
