Research Interests:
I am a historian of philosophy working on French, German and Dutch traditions in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries - and sometimes into the twentieth century. This includes:
(a) research on F. W. J. Schelling and philosophers of nature, like Kielmeyer and Eschenmayer, which has led to a lot of work on the plant humanities and plant philosophy.
(b) research on the origins of German Idealism and Romanticism, particularly Hemsterhuis' philosophy.
(c) research on French historiography of philosophy from Victor Cousin onwards.
I am currently developing two new projects on: (1) French historians of philosophy after Cousin with particular emphasis on Ferdinand Alquié and Etienne Souriau (L'Instauration philosophique); (2) debates over morphological method, both in the plant morphologies of Wilhelm Troll and Agnes Arber and in more recent receptions of Goethe, such as Jean Petitot.
