Research Interests:
I am an applied microeconomist working across labour, health and development economics. My research asks how policies, institutions and life events shape people's outcomes, from birth and early childhood into adult life. I work mainly with large administrative datasets and quasi-experimental methods.
Four themes drive my current agenda. Intergroup contact: how exposure to people from other regions or backgrounds changes identity, prejudice and cooperation, building on my work on Spanish conscription. Geographical mobility: whether moving, for work, study or service, opens up opportunity, and for whom. Health shocks: how illness and pressure on health systems affect labour supply, productivity and the care people receive. And intimate partner violence: how to measure it when official statistics under-record it, and which economic conditions and policies raise or reduce it.
Alongside these, I continue to work on health-care delivery, on how staffing, workload and incentives shape quality in maternity wards and primary care.
