Professor Emma Mayhew has been appointed as Royal Holloway’s new Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education & Student Experience), starting in position from 7 April 2025 and will build on the excellent work done by Professor Wyn Morgan during his interim appointment to this role.
Professor Mayhew is currently Professor of Pedagogy in Politics and the Associate Dean (Education) for the Faculty of Arts, Business and Social Sciences at the University of Surrey, and served as Interim Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) from September 2023 to June 2024.
Prior to this, she was a Lecturer and Associate Professor at the University of Reading from 2007 and the Academic Director of its award-winning, multi-million pound Electronic Management of Assessment Programme. She has published widely across a range of pedagogic areas, is a Principal Fellow of the HEA, a National Teaching Fellow, and has worked as an Associate for Advance HE.
She joins Royal Holloway to drive forwards its ambitious plans for education and student experience as articulated in the University strategy, RH2030s, bringing brilliant and diverse cohorts of students to Royal Holloway and helping them to thrive: a core part of Royal Holloway’s work as a University of Social Purpose.
Professor Julie Sanders, Royal Holloway’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal, said: “We’re delighted that Emma will be joining us at Royal Holloway. As a University of Social Purpose, we’re committed to making opportunities in higher education as open and inclusive as we can – and to keep evolving to meet the needs of our students, from enabling research-infused learning and industry-immersive opportunities, to building community and belonging across our Egham and London campuses.
"I know Emma will bring enormous energy to this mission as well as her extensive experience. My colleagues and I very much look forward to welcoming her to the team in April.”
Professor Emma Mayhew said: “I’m thrilled to be joining the Royal Holloway community as Pro-Vice-Chancellor Education and Student Experience. This is an institution with such an outstanding reputation, commitment to academic excellence, dedication to truly inclusive education and unwavering focus on social purpose.
“I’m looking forward to connecting with dedicated academic and professional services colleagues, talented students and inspirational partners who share the same passion for outstanding educational provision. I’m excited to build on the transformative work already underway across the institution to deliver the vision outlined in the RH2030s strategy and to nurture a truly supportive environment in which everyone can succeed and flourish.”
