What are the possibilities for Augmented and Virtual Reality within the context of theatre?
Digital technologies afford new realities through virtual worlds, avatars, motion capture, facial recognition, and Artificial Intelligence. Yet it is still unclear how we can harness these technologies to build characters, stories, and worlds. We are asking ourselves what digital and theatrical strategies we can bring together to make new work, cross-pollinating the digital and the theatrical. We also wonder what kind of stories we can tell in the new realities of digital theatre and how we can address urgent issues of our times through AR and VR.
Theatre is facing an uncertain future. We know how important it is for those within the community to come together to discuss new possibilities for conceiving, making, and viewing performance. Whether you’re an expert in the field or simply someone with questions, we invite you to talk about the future of digital technology in theatre. We want to facilitate open conversations. You can propose topics and freely participate in discussions. You can move between discussion groups and take breaks as you wish. This event is a great opportunity for anyone interested in the performative potential of technology.
On Thursday 16 July from 10-5pm, Royal Holloway is teaming up with Improbable theatre company who will be facilitating an all-day workshop using Open Space Technology. The event is a simple way for groups of people to think, work, and take action together around a shared concern. Nothing is censored, and you set the agenda on the day. You are free to join and leave groups as you like, throughout the day.
How to join:
- We will be using two online tools: Zoom (a simple, free video chat app) and Qiqochat (a website that will help us to organise our breakout sessions – you can find the event link above). We strongly recommend using a laptop or desktop – the Qiqochat website is not optimised for mobiles, tablets or iPads.
- When it's time for your event, go to the Qiqochat website via this event link.
- Select Create an Account or Join as Guest. If you're joining as a Guest, type in a temporary username and click Save
- The page will refresh. Enter the event password (holloway) and click Enter.
- Click Join the Event >> (big green button).
- Once you’re in the event, press Join Video for Main Space (green button in the top left-hand corner).
- We’ve also prepared a comprehensive guide that covers how to navigate your Open Space Online event in more detail (including instructions on how to use Zoom). Your facilitators will also explain how to use Zoom and Qiqochat at the start of the event, so there’s no need to read the Guide from cover to cover – it’s there if you need it! You can download the guide here.
