Dr Karina Berger - Teaching Fellow in German Literature and Language

As a Teaching Fellow in German Literature and Language, I teach a range of different modules for all year groups, including German history and culture, translation theory, advanced German translation, and Romantic literature. My main research interests are in post-war German literature and, increasingly, translation theory and practice. I am also a freelance translator.

My PhD thesis (University of Leeds, 2012) investigated the representation of flight and expulsion in post-war German literature, and was part of a major AHRC-funded project. In recent years, I have focused increasingly on translation and have translated a range of texts, focusing in particular on non-fiction and academic texts.

For much of my work I also draw on my previous experience as a sub-editor and proof-reader across a range of different media, which has provided me with valuable professional skills. I have published various articles, a monograph and several translations, including two full-length books.
