Research areas and projects

The English Department has research strength across the full range of English literature from Anglo Saxon to the present as well as in literary theory and creative writing. These strengths are demonstrated in both cutting-edge research by individual researchers and by collaborative interdisciplinary work.

We work with departments across the School of Humanities, particularly with researchers in Classics. Interdisciplinary and cross-period research clusters specialise in adaptation, theatre and performance, gender, book history, material and visual culture, heritage, digital humanities, medical humanities and geo-humanities. To develop our strengths further, our strategic focus is on developing the civic dimension of literary studies; providing leadership to the discipline as it evolves; building our research with support of grant income and UKRI awards; extending our strengths at the interface of critical scholarship, creative writing and practice-based research.
