About the composer
Jasmine Bates (b. 2000) is a final-year undergraduate student at Royal Holloway, University of London, specialising in composition and musicology. Her interest in composition was sparked in sixth form, when she had her well-received wind quintet (Mad in Craft) premiered at an end of year concert. Since then, Jasmine has enjoyed writing, amongst other things, for CHROMA Ensemble and the New Music Collective where her open score piece Malfunction was premiered, and has been asked to write for the Barnet Youth Wind Orchestra, the Ionian Clarinet Choir, and a song cycle for a fellow student’s end of year recital. Jasmine’s main instruments are flute and recorder, and she particularly enjoys writing for wind instruments, but she has also recently shown a flare for writing for voice. As a composer, Jasmine sometimes draws inspiration from plays, poems and paintings, often being attracted to existential themes, although not exclusively so.
Jasmine has thrived on the challenge of composing using DAWs during the covid-19 pandemic and hopes that this is a skill she can continue to build on, whilst eagerly anticipating working again with colleagues in person in the not-too-distant future.
As a musicologist, Jasmine is most interested in historical musicology, with a particular enthusiasm for Russian music, and she is currently writing her dissertation focusing on Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth. Jasmine is hoping to find a way to incorporate both composition and musicology in her future endeavours, as she is passionate about both fields.
