Study abroad

Study abroad

We have a well-established Study Abroad programme for international students who would like to spend a full academic year or a term at Royal Holloway, even if they are not from a partner institution. This route usually involves the student paying fees directly to Royal Holloway (see below for 'How much does study abroad cost?'), but some of our Study Abroad partner universities collect and pay fees to us on the student's behalf. Please check with your home university to confirm.

You can look forward to studying at one of the UK's top research-led universities in a friendly, supportive environment. Our beautiful campus is set in 135 acres of parkland and is just 19 miles from central London on a direct rail link. Our proximity to Heathrow means you also have easy access to the rest of Europe.

You can join us for a period ranging from 12 to 38 weeks. There are three options open to you:

  • Autumn term (September to December)
  • Spring and Summer terms (January to June)
  • The full academic year (September to June).

Specific term dates can be found here.

As a Study Abroad student (including Masters students), you can apply for campus accommodation and will be prioritised provided you apply before the deadline. You have two options:

Self-catering accommodation

You’ll have the use of a shared kitchen so you can cook your own meals.

Catered accommodation

Meals are provided on a pay-as-you-go basis. If you choose catered accommodation, you’ll receive a College card entitling you to a discount of around 50%. Catered Halls have small pantries so you can prepare hot drinks and snacks.

All rooms have internet access and most are single-occupancy. Many have their own en-suite shower room. See our accommodation pages for more information.

Please note you can now select specific halls preferences rather than 'bands'. You can also indicate preferences such as sharing with students who do not consume alcohol, or with mature students only. Our accommodation team will do their best to meet these preferences wherever possible.

For accommodation queries, email studentaccommodation@royalholloway.ac.uk.

Fees vary depending on how long you want to study here and whether you’re from one of our partner universities. For more information see fees, funding and costs.

To apply for a Study Abroad programme, follow our step-by-step guide.

Our dedicated support is one of the reasons why so many students choose a Study Abroad programme at Royal Holloway.

For more information see here.

If you’re a current Royal Holloway student, you too can study abroad.

You can spend up to a year at a university in Europe or further afield, depending on which option you choose.
