Clearing top tips and advice

Clearing top tips and advice

  • Date05 August 2024

As the date for A-Level results gets closer, many potential university students will have questions on what they need to do to get a place via Clearing, and Royal Holloway has some helpful answers.

Clearing and adjustment

For many, Clearing might seem difficult, but it doesn’t need to be. Royal Holloway not only has several tips on the run-up to 15 August, but also two webinar events where people can hear more about Clearing and how it could help them.

The first webinar is on 6 August and the second on 13 August. Both events are free and quick to sign up to. Potential students can also chat with Royal Holloway students and staff about what matters to them and find out more about the University.

Tip tips for Clearing

Before you get your results

  • Do your research before results day and make sure you have a good back up plan, just in case you don't do as well as you hoped.
  • List other universities and courses that you might be interested in following up.
  • Consider what's important to you: Your course? Living near home? Being able to commute? Campus or city university? Life beyond the degree?
  • Talk with your school or college about different courses that could still take you towards your chosen career.
  • Remember entry requirements during Clearing can be more flexible.
  • Call or arrange visits to universities you're interested in and speak to course leaders/admissions tutors to find out more.

On A-level results day

Don't panic!

  • Have your details to hand. Make sure you have all the facts you need written down, including your main details and your results.
  • Be persistent, stay positive and keep calling. If your first choice is a no, try them again later in case entry requirements have changed.
  • Be patient - phone lines can be busy, but you will get through.
  • If you're offered a place, ask about accommodation and find out how to apply if you want to.
  • Find out if you can visit the campus in person or virtually – Royal Holloway has several campus tours before Clearing so people can come and take a look. Book yours here.

Potential students can call Royal Holloway to ask about Clearing once they have their results. For most, this will be 15 August, A-level results day, but they can call any time from 5 July if they have results from other qualifications (e.g. Scottish Higher, International Baccalaureate) or if they have completed their A-levels in previous years.

Call the Clearing Hotline on 01784 772455.

Hotline opening hours:

  • 5 July - 14 August 2024: Monday to Friday 10am-4pm
  • Results day Thursday 15 August: 8am-7pm
  • Friday 16 August: 8am-6pm
  • Saturday 17 August: 9am-2pm
  • Sunday 18 August: Closed
  • Monday 19 August: 9am-5pm
