Dr. Jenny Korkodeilou has been invited to speak at the British Society of Criminology (BSC) Conference 2021 which is run online this year in collaboration with Open University, on 7th- 9th July 2021

Dr. Jenny Korkodeilou will speak at the British Society of Criminology (BSC) Conference about a high-profile murder case: the rape/murder of Greek young female student Eleni Topaloudi, occurred in Greece in 2018. This was a landmark case, as it led to the criminalisation of femicide in Greece. In the talk – titled “We are not all here, the Murdered are Missing: Critical Reflections on Femicide, Harms and Justice through Eleni Topaloudi's murder case in Greece” – Dr. Korkodeilou will use Eleni Topaloudi’s case to reflect on and problematise gendered ‘truths’, patriarchal, stereotypical beliefs and norms that are still dominant in Greek, albeit not exclusively, culture and society.

In this talk, Dr. Korkodeilou will touch on themes that are centred (but are not limited to) on misogyny, sexism, race, social class, gender, common myths and socio-cultural pathologies. This case will be seen through a critical criminological prism allowing to an extent comparisons with cases from other countries and jurisdictions and locating the case with national/international/global justice context. This talk should be seen and anticipated ideally as a prelude to wider dialogues and debates on social justice, criminal justice system responses to gendered crime, cultures, harms and the usefulness (or not) of feminist thinking and conceptualisation of these crimes as femicidal.

Dr. Korkodeilou’s talk will take place on Friday 9 July between 10-11:30 am BST.
