This project, spearheaded by Dr Janina Beiser-McGrath of RHUL's PIRP and Dr Mike Spagat, aims to deepen the understanding of casualty recording in African conflicts through a series of innovative webinars and cutting-edge data visualization initiatives.
Residency Overview: Federica Riccardi, ECC's Global Network Lead will spend time embedded at Royal Holloway over a period of four months. The residency consists of three primary components:
- Co-developing a webinar series on Casualty Recording in African Conflicts:
- This series, co-planned with Dr Sophia Dawkins of the European University Institute, will feature discussions on specific conflicts, spotlight members of ECC's Casualty Recorders Network (CRN) involved in these conflicts, and include experts from the academic and policy community.
- Data Visualization Task Force:
- This collaborative effort aims to set standards and provide tools for casualty recorders. The objective is to enhance the effectiveness and clarity of casualty data presentation.
- Networking and Collaboration:
- Federica will be introduced to a wide range of people at RHUL, fostering potential collaborations and interdisciplinary connections. This networking phase is expected to generate unforeseen yet valuable cooperative opportunities.
Intended Outputs and Impact
The definitive outputs of this project include the webinar series and the establishment of data visualization guidelines for ECC’s Casualty Recorders Network. Additionally, we anticipate that this residency will foster new, impactful connections. The effectiveness and reach of these initiatives will be evaluated through follow-up surveys and data on webinar participation.
