Mind the gap - with guest speaker from the National Cyber Security Centre

Royal Holloway and its world-renowned Information Security Group are delighted to announce the inaugural Fred Piper Information Security Lecture. Professor Fred Piper founded our Information Security Group, and his work has shaped thinking about how information is protected and managed. Fred played an instrumental role in making information security both publicly accessible and a fully-fledged academic subject. It is therefore fitting that we honour this legacy with this new public lecture series.

On 9 December, the inaugural Fred Piper Information Security Lecture will be given by given by a guest speaker from the National Cyber Security Centre. The lecture is titled “Mind the Gap”.

The lecture will discuss the defence and resilience of businesses and institutions in the face of the threat of cyber attack. Innovation and digital transformation are driving the growth of businesses and provision of better services throughout our economy and the wider world. That in turn is building a greater dependency on technology and therefore exposure to the impact of cyber attacks. At the same time the threat environment for cyber attacks is developing at pace, with a wider range of more capable actors than ever before. However, the defences of our businesses and institutions are not growing at a commensurate pace and so there is a widening gap between the exposure and threat, and our ability to defend and be resilient. As a society we need to step up to the challenge of closing that gap - both in terms of our defences and our ability to be resilient in the face of successful attacks. This talk will explore that challenge and what we collectively can do to close the gap.

Admission is free, but booking is essential.
