The 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference, more commonly known as the Conference of the Parties of the UNFCC (COP) took place between Sunday 6 and Friday 18 November 2022.
Royal Holloway, University of London addressed the importance of COP27 through extensive media and public engagement and hosted a COP26 Forum with events and activities for students, staff and the general public, which was held from 1-12 November 2021.
All of which acts to support earlier work of the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) and demonstrate how the university’s community contributes to meeting the challenges posed by climate change and ecological loss, decarbonisation and helping to generate creative engagements and solutions.
The COP26 Forum in 2021 showcased Royal Holloway’s challenge-led research from the Living Sustainably research theme which addresses the challenges of climate change, biodiversity, food and energy security, infectious disease, inequalities in education, work and participation, political polarisation and resource consumption. Living Sustainably is one of four research themes which aims to build a strength in challenge-led research from the university’s well established research strengths as outlined in Royal Holloway’s three-year strategic plan.
Royal Holloway is a member of the COP26 Universities Network and was an accredited observer at COP26, and a number of academics attended the conference in Glasgow.

Across departments and campus
Staff and students from across academic and professional services departments have been working to put together this series of events and initiatives. Academics, like Dr Bethan Davies, below left on the Gepatschferner glacier, are involved in international research collaborations on climate change.
Before and during the talks there will be a daily blog featuring research from Royal Holloway academics that is contributing to the advancement of the 17 Sustainability Development Goals.
Members of the public are invited to take part in online events, such as a student-led panel with local Surrey councillors, as well as Eco Walks around the Royal Holloway campus.
