New Undergraduate Course: BSc Economics and Data Science

New Undergraduate Course: BSc Economics and Data Science

  • Date28 April 2022

The Department is delighted to announce that our new undergraduate BSc Economics and Data Science will start in September 2022

The BSc in Economics and Data Science integrates modern tools and methods of data collection, analysis, and visualization with classical training in Economics. The core aim of the course is to provide students not only with a high-quality training in standard economic analysis, but also with a set of high-powered quantitative skills, including programming, data analysis, and statistical literacy. The course meets an increasing industry-expectation that a well-trained economist should also be versed in modern data analysis and familiar with industry-standard software.

A pair of core modules (“Introduction to Data Science” and “Economic Modelling and Data Science”) will (i) train the students to abstractly think about data and data analysis, and how to concretely implement techniques using the Python programming language, and (ii) explore how data analysis skills can be employed in empirical work in economics using both Python and R. Students will then deepen their understanding of- and skills in modern data analysis through a set of options that cover the full “data journey” from acquisition (“Web-Scraping and Internet-Based Data Collection”), exploration (“Machine Learning and Data Mining”), presentation (“Data Presentation and Visualisation”), and integration with economic analysis (“Time Series for Macroeconomics with Data Science”).

The BSc in Economics and Data Science will have a strong focus on delivering in-demand skills – using industry-standard tools and authentic assessment methods – in order to further the employability of our students in a fast-moving market.
