Kyoko Au

Trainee Chartered Accountant at Blick Rothenberg

Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My name is Kyoko, I studied Economics and I graduated in 2022

Why did you choose to study Economics at Royal Holloway and what did you enjoy most about your course?
I chose to study Economics at Royal Holloway because I loved the appeal of being close to London and being close to home. The open days I attended really sold it to me as everyone was so kind and welcoming, I just felt at ease and calm about the idea of joining Royal Holloway, so I did!

How was your personal experience of being part of the Economics community as a close- knit group of staff and students?
Difficult to say as two years of it was plagued by Covid but I think they offered great support and were always reminding us of ways to stay connected which I thought was nice. Professors and staff are always approachable and there to help you as well.

How did Royal Holloway help you to discover opportunities and prepare you for life after university / to find your purpose in life?
Because of Royal Holloway, I got to meet so many people from different career paths which really helped me narrow down what I wanted to do with my life. I also got to be involved with lots of great projects such as volunteering and working at Boilerhouse, and it just helped me to be more comfortable with myself.

Tell us about your career journey since graduating and what you do now. What do you enjoy most / find most rewarding about your current role?
Since graduating I have managed to secure a graduate scheme in London. It has been really life changing to be honest, I feel like I have learnt so many things in such a short amount of time and have met some really great people here as well.

What are your top tips for students thinking about a career in your line of work/study?
To really make each moment count. 3 years goes by quickly and you should never take a second of it for granted, make the most of everything the department offers because you never know what might inspire you. Also, really explore things, there are so many areas you can go into from finance and just be open minded about it all and go in willing to learn.
