Geography BGM and Widening Access Studentship

Geography BGM and Widening Access Studentship

  • Date24 January 2023

This studentship, now in its second year, will be awarded to a strong, qualified applicant from a BGM (black and global majority) background.

In addition to ethnicity, the department will consider other demographic characteristics as outlined for access and participation by the OfS (e.g. low polar quintile, low IMD quintile, disability, mature status, care giving, coming from a low performing school, no parental background in Higher Education). Undergraduate performance and A level grades at entry into university will also be considered. The studentship will be awarded based on academic potential and how the candidate meets the above criteria.

The studentship is one of several initiatives that we are undertaking at Royal Holloway as part of our Race Equality Charter, and is a positive action measure under s.158 of the Equality Act 2010 to increase participation in an under-represented group of PGR students, as identified within our department. We reserve the right not to award in any given year.

For this studentship, we welcome student-led project ideas, developed alongside a potential supervisor. Please have a look at our staff webpages here and contact staff directly to discuss whether they would be willing to supervise a project in your area of interest. When approaching staff it is advisable to attach a copy of your CV and transcript to date, as well as some information on what has motivated you to do to a PhD and what interests you about the proposed research area (link to staff expertise where appropriate). The studentship can support research that fits within or across any of our research groups and centres: the Centre for the GeoHumanities (CGH); the Centre for Quaternary Research (CQR); the Geopolitics, Development, Security and Justice research group (GDSJ); and the Social, Cultural, and Historical Geography research group (SCHG).

The studentship provides a fully funded stipend at a minimum of £19,668 per annum for 3.5 years (a maintenance allowance at standard UKRI rates) and also covers tuition fees at the home-student rate. International applicants are welcome to apply but would be required to pay the difference between home and international tuition fees- more information on fees here.

Applications are welcome from eligible candidates with a background in Geography or a related discipline in science, social science, the arts and humanities. Applications are due by 31st May 2023. For help in this process, please get in touch with the Department of Geography PGR Lead, Dr. Sasha Engelmann (sasha.engelmann@rhul.ac.uk).

To apply for this studentship, please follow the specific guidance as set out on our website: https://www.royalholloway.ac.uk/research-and-teaching/departments-and-schools/geography/studying-here/postgraduate/
