Dr Hilary Potter - Teaching Fellow in German

I teach on the German and Translation Studies programmes in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures.

My first-year teaching includes GM1122 German History and Culture, GM1400 German Culture and Translation and ML1400 Introduction to Translation: Professional Skills (Term 1). In the second year I teach GM2009 German Language 2, GM2400 German Translation: Skills and Practice and ML2400 Questions of Translation: Intercultural communication (Term 2). In the final year I teach GM3131 Dark Tales: ETA Hoffmann and German Romanticism.

I am also the Year Abroad Co-ordinator for German.

I am a specialist in German cultural memory and identity. My current project focuses on the Weimar Republic and its contemporary resonances. I also work on representations of the 1943 Berlin Rosenstrasse Protest, publishing my first monograph Remembering Rosenstrasse: History, Memory, Identity in Contemporary Germany, with Peter Lang, Oxford in 2018 and most recently on remembering in an age of right-wing populism, “Man kann der Verantwortung nicht entrinnen.” Remembering Rosenstrasse 75 Years On. German Life and Letters, Nr.3 (July 2020) https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/glal.12273

In addition, I am also interested in translation, in teaching and learning and in the year abroad and mental wellbeing.
