PGCR 2018: Emily de Gruchy

Selected as part of the 2018 Picture Gallery Composer-in-Residence scheme.

Emily de Gruchy (b.1998) is a third-year undergraduate BMus student majoring in Composition at Royal Holloway, University of London. She is a clarinetist, saxophonist, pianist, and percussionist who was born in Jersey, Channel Islands. She has studied under the likes of Russell Abraham, Mark Bowden, Samantha Fernando, and Aaron Holloway-Nahum. She has been involved and collaborated with the New Music Collective during her time at university, with two premieres of her pieces "An Anti-Halycon" for Solo Cello (February 2017) and "an invitation to men who want a better world for women" for Solo Viola (March 2018). Previously, she has had pieces commissioned and performed by her home chamber orchestra, the Jersey Sinfionetta ("Macabre" and "the beauty of the storm", both for small wind ensemble et al., both 2016) and was a finalist for the NCEM Young Composer of the Year with her first choral work "Ave Regina Caelorum" for unaccompanied SSATB choir (May 2017), which was performed by the Ebor Singers and conducted by Peter Phillips. Emily hopes that her compositional career will continue to thrive as she aims to produce more works for small ensembles and explore more genres such as fusion jazz and electronics.
