Emily Howling has been successful in getting a SEPnet placement at UKAEA

Emily will be Performing and evaluating experiments with an ion implantation and outgassing facility

The UK Atomic Energy Authority operates the world’s largest magnetic confinement fusion research device, the Joint European Torus (JET) and the UK’s own fusion programme, the Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak (MAST), both at Culham Science Centre in Oxfordshire.

Nuclear fusion is the process that produces the Sun’s energy. A similar process is planned to be used to generate electrical power here on Earth. JET has achieved controlled fusion with D-T fuel (deuterium-tritium gas, a mixture of heavy hydrogen isotopes) for the first time in the world. It is a crucial tool on the pathway to commercial nuclear fusion for testing new technologies and materials that later can be used in fusion reactors. The Tritium Science Group at UKAEA aims to understand the behaviour of tritium in contact with other materials, and develop new technologies for tritium handling, while also aiding D-T operations at JET.
