Research at the Royal Holloway Centre for Particle Physics and Astronomy includes:

The Centre plays a leading role in international collaborations based at facilities such as CERN (Switzerland), J-PARC (Japan) and Sanford Lab (USA). The John Adams Institute for Accelerator Science includes long-term projects at many of the world’s leading high energy physics laboratories including CERN, KEK (Japan), SLAC and Fermilab (USA), DESY (Germany), Daresbury Lab and Diamond (UK).

Research in Quantum Materials and Technologies at Royal Holloway includes:

  • Nanophysics and Nanotechnology, Quantum Devices (metallic nanostructures, superconducting nano circuits and devices)
  • Quantum Fluids and Solids: London Low Temperature Laboratory (helium systems: solid, supersolid, 2D quantum fluids, superfluid optomechanic, and strongly correlated electronic systems, operating at micro Kelvin)
  • Quantum Matter (magnetic monopoles, quantum criticality and superconductivity, thermoelectrics and battery materials)
  • Hubbard Theory Consortium (strongly correlated theory in dynamical mean field theory, correlated electron systems, cold atoms and quantum many-body non-equilibrium physics)

Major internationally leading facilities at RHUL for this research include the SuperFab nanofabrication centre, the Materials Discovery Laboratory, and the London Low Temperature Laboratory. Staff and students have access to collaborations at major UK and international facilities including the nearby ISIS and Diamond (X-ray, neutron scattering).

Opportunities for Masters and PhD training are available in all of the above areas. PhD studentships are available. The Rutherford prize is awarded by the Centre for Particle Physics and Astronomy to an outstanding incoming student.
