  • Date18 November 2024

Tom Dyson presented the findings of his ESRC project ‘A Revolution in Military Learning: Uncovering the Potential of Lessons-Learned Processes’ at the 10th Explosive Ordnance Disposal Workshop in Šamorín, Slovakia, on 5th November 2024. The workshop provides an opportunity for subject matter experts in explosive ordnance disposal, counter-improvised explosive devices, chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defence, and defence against terrorism, to network and share lessons-learned.

The presentation, which was co-delivered with Dr John Tull (University of Greenwich, formerly of PIRP), focused on the best-practices emerging from Prof Dyson’s grant for the development of lessons-learned processes within NATO Centres of Excellence, especially the EOD COE. It addressed practitioner needs identified during previous presentations to the NATO COE community, including the 2024 NATO Lessons-Learned Conference and 2024 NATO Centres of Excellence Directors’ Conference. The presentation was well received by the audience, which consisted of military officers, civil servants and industry representatives from a wide variety of NATO member-states, NATO Interoperability Platform Countries, and NATO organisations. It has already led to invitations for Prof Dyson and Dr Tull to publish in EOD practitioner publications and to present at future EOD events organised by NATO partner-states.

Other topics addressed at the workshop included humanitarian de-mining, the latest developments in EOD education and training, and the opportunities provided by artificial intelligence for EOD. Numerous presentations were also delivered by NATO member-states, Interoperability Platform Countries and industry about lessons-learned and the latest technological developments in EOD.
