Project: Developing multimedia resources for the safe, secure and wise use of digital tech by vulnerable groups in Brazil

Context and Underpinning Research

In an era where digital technology is increasingly integral to everyday life, ensuring that vulnerable groups can use these tools safely, securely, and wisely is more important than ever. Building on the success of the UKRI GCRF MIDEQ Hub's research-practice outputs, our new proposal aims to extend the reach and impact of these resources in Brazil through impactful partnerships and innovative re-contextualization.

Project Overview

Our impact project involves collaborating with partners in Brazil who bring essential linguistic and cultural expertise. This collaboration will enable us to redesign our multimedia resources, making them suitable for new contexts and accessible to a broader audience.

The project focuses on two main outputs:

Digital Preparedness Training Materials:

  • Originally developed in six languages used in Nepal, these materials will be adapted for Brazilian contexts, aiding not only migrants but also other vulnerable groups. This extension will be facilitated through our work with IMJA and CETIC, broadening our focus beyond migrants to include other marginalised communities.

Community Multimedia Content:

  • Recognising the significance of multimedia tools in reaching some of the poorest populations, we are exploring the possibility of creating audio content based on our digital preparedness training materials. This endeavour will potentially extend beyond Brazil, with plans to share Portuguese translations in Lusophone Africa, focusing on Mozambique and Angola, demonstrating our commitment to making digital technology a safe and empowering tool for all.

Anticipated Outcomes and Impact

The anticipated impact of this project is substantial. By re-contextualizing our training materials and creating a range of multimedia content, we aim to significantly enhance digital literacy and preparedness among vulnerable groups in Brazil. This project will empower these communities, allowing them to harness the benefits of digital technology while minimising risks.

The Role of Flexible Funding

The Flexible Funding award is instrumental in realising the goals of this project. It supports the crucial adaptation and dissemination of our resources in Brazil, ensuring that our materials are culturally relevant and accessible. This funding is the backbone of our efforts to make a tangible difference in the lives of marginalised communities.

Next Steps: Implementation and Outreach

Our immediate next steps include the adaptation of digital preparedness materials into relevant Brazilian contexts and languages. We will leverage the local networks of our Brazilian partners for effective dissemination and engage with community members to ensure our resources meet their needs.
