Andrew’s story

Andrew’s story

Andrew Zhen Ning Yong, Theoretical Physics, dreams of a career researching particle physics.

Why did you choose to study at Royal Holloway?

My aspiration to have a research career in particle physics aligns very well with the vision of the Physics department – that is, to produce individuals who are well-equipped in the knowledge of physical science and have a broad range of important life skills. Also, I’ve always wanted to experience a campus life and was captivated by the mix of urban and natural layout. If you’ve been on a tour of the campus, you’ll know what I mean!

What do you enjoy most about Theoretical Physics?

I love the enthusiasm of the academic staff and the way they develop your critical thinking and inspire you. It has motivated me to learn, not just to achieve a good grade, but also from  intellectual curiosity and a love for the subject.

What is your favourite thing about being a student at Royal Holloway?

As an international student from Malaysia, I have to say my favourite aspect as a student here is the opportunity to meet other people from all around the world. We have over 2,000 students from abroad – and that’s not even including students from the European Union! With bright minds hailing from over 100 countries, the environment is so rich in diversity. I’ve really enjoyed being immersed in it.

What is the student life like?

It’s very well-balanced.  We are in good proximity to a lot of attractions. For instance, Windsor is merely a 20 minute bus journey, the alternative being a stroll through the beautiful Windsor Great Park. There is also a frequent train journey that takes you  to London Waterloo in under an hour. It seems to me to be an advantage to be at a close enough distance to enjoy all sorts of London adventures without the city life distractions. There are also over 100  societies and 50 sports clubs run by the Students' Union. They range from the usual favourites such as tennis and hockey but also a broad range of cultural societies, Ballroom and Latin Dancing, and even a music video production society called Reel Music. One thing is for sure – there is something for everyone!
