Interdisciplinary, world-leading research
Research drives all we do. Academics in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures are active researchers with international reputations, and their work forms the basis of the courses taken by our students.
Our research environment has a basis in our expertise in French, German, Spanish, Italian and Comparative Literature, and encourages collaboration and exchange across traditional disciplinary boundaries. Our strengths span literature, thought, film, cultural history and the visual arts from the medieval period to the 21st century.
Our world-leading research strengths were confirmed by the results of the most recent, nationally-conducted Research Excellence Framework (2014), which saw us ranked 9th in the country among Modern Languages departments, and top in London. All of the studies looked at were also recognised for their 'outstanding' or 'very considerable' impact (defined as 'reach and significance').
Our postgraduates play a vital and active role in our research culture, and we run an annual Postgraduate Colloquium showcasing the work of our MA by Research and PhD students.
