Studying Spanish

Studying Spanish

Spanish is spoken as a first language by around 470 million people across the globe.

In many countries, such as the United States, it plays an increasingly influential role in business, culture and politics.

At Royal Holloway, you will develop an excellent knowledge of the Spanish language, as well as of translation, literature, film, visual arts, history and popular culture, and you will be guided by an international team of supportive specialists.

To learn Spanish and engage with the richness and diversity of Spanish-speaking culture is to acquire the key to a wide range of different communities in Europe, the Americas and Africa.

Alongside the analytical skills you will gain here, such knowledge and understanding will open doors to careers in international business, finance, media, the arts, law, translation, travel, consultancy and teaching, both in Britain and abroad.

Degree combinations

You can study Spanish as a beginner or as an advanced learner, as part of BA Modern Languages or as an element of Comparative Literature and Culture (CLC), or Liberal Arts. Spanish can also be studied as part of a Joint Honours course alongside subjects including CLC, Drama, English, History, History of Art and Visual Culture, Music, and Management, and Politics and International Relations. We also offer Spanish as a minor subject with Law or Music.

Course units

You will be able to pursue your existing interests and discover new passions: we offer a diverse range of modules on language, translation, literature, drama, film, photography and other visual arts, society and history from the 16th to the 21st century in Spain as well as Latin America: from Cervantes to García Márquez, Picasso, Lorca, Frida Kahlo and Almodóvar.
