Co-POWeR is an 18-month multi-disciplinary consortium of ten academics from across the UK, nine of whom are members of the Black Female Professors Forum.

Co-POWeR (Consortium on Practices of Wellbeing and Resilience in Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Families and Communities) works across five interlinked areas:

  • Work Package 1: Emergency Powers
  • Work Package 2: Children, Young People and their families
  • Work Package 3: Care, Caring and Carers
  • Work Package 4: Physical Activity and Nutrition
  • Work Package 5: Empowering BAMEFC through Positive Narratives

In order to raise awareness on the issues faced by Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Families and Communities (BAMEFCs), Co-POWeR is organising a virtual event on 30 June 2021 at 2 pm BST. The event is free but registration is required here. The programme of the event will be published shortly.

This event acknowledges that two viruses – COVID-19 and discrimination – are currently killing in the UK (Solanke 2020), especially within BAMEFC who are hardest hit. Survivors face ongoing damage to wellbeing and resilience, in terms of physical and mental health as well as social, cultural and economic (non-medical) consequences.

The purpose of this event and of the activity of the consortium is to provide evidenced recommendations to key audiences (healthcare stakeholders, policy-makers, local government and social services), targeting policy and behavioural change, and raising awareness to support BAMEFC to live well and in confidence under COVID-19. Prof. Anna Gupta (Department of Social Work, RHUL) is co-investigator in this consortium.
