Translation Studies involves the study of one or two languages: choose from French, German, Italian or Spanish at beginners’, advanced or native-speaker levels.
You will combine the study of language with courses on strategies and theories of translation, and will practise applying what you learn throughout your degree, in practical classes focusing on translation into English.
You will thereby improve not only your fluency in your chosen language(s), but also your own translation and critical skills and your understanding of how languages work. You will undertake a translation project of your choice in your final year. The course may be studied as a three-year or four-year programme, with the four-year programme involving a year spent abroad.
Translation Studies will give you:
- Fluency in one or two languages, as well as excellent writing, reading, speaking and listening skills in your language(s) and English
- In-depth knowledge of the theories and processes of translation
- Skills in critical analysis, close-reading and writing and editing, in English as well as in your other language(s)
